    Our Newest ArtsBridge Summer Program

Check out our newest addition to the ArtsBridge Summer lineup: Contemporary Vocal Performance!

ArtsBridge Summer Contemporary Vocal Performance offers high school singers intensive voice study with faculty from top college programs. During their time in residence, students will explore a diverse array of contemporary commercial repertoire including pop, rock, country, jazz, R&B, singer-songwriter, and more. Curriculum will include classes in lyric interpretation, performance skills, vocal health and wellness, and techniques to ace an audition. Students will also receive private voice lessons and coachings.

Heading this extraordinary program is Dr. Justin John Moniz. A globally recognized authority in vocal pedagogy and performance, he was recently named a 2025 Master Teacher by the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). He holds the position of Associate Director of Vocal Performance and Coordinator of Vocal Pedagogy at New York University’s (NYU) Steinhardt School, where he is a Music Associate Professor. In addition to his work at NYU, Dr. Moniz is a member of the vocal arts faculty at Manhattan School of Music.

We sat down with Justin to discuss his teaching philosophy and what to expect at this new program.

Q&A: Read on to hear directly from Dr. Justin John Moniz about this new program.

Tell us a little bit about your background.

I have a diverse background in the performing arts, starting as a young performer myself. Over the years, I have worked as a vocalist, music director, and educator within various styles of music. My passion for contemporary vocal performance has led me to collaborate with many artists in different genres, from pop to jazz to musical theater, and I’m excited to bring that experience to the ArtsBridge Summer program.

What is Contemporary Vocal Performance? What genres does it include?

Contemporary Vocal Performance encompasses a wide range of musical styles that are popular today. This includes genres like pop, rock, R&B, jazz, and even elements of musical theater and electronic music. It’s a versatile approach to singing that emphasizes personal expression and stylistic diversity, allowing performers to connect with their audience in unique ways.

Can you tell us about the new Contemporary Voice program at ArtsBridge Summer? What will the students be working on?

The Contemporary Voice program at ArtsBridge Summer is designed to empower students to explore their individual voices while honing their technical skills. Throughout the program, students will work on song interpretation, vocal technique, style, and performance techniques. They’ll also be involved in workshops that focus on artistic collaboration, creating a well-rounded experience that emphasizes both artistry and technique.

What if I’m interested in studying musical theater, too? Or classical voice? How do I know if this program is right for me?

This program is quite flexible and does welcome students with interests in musical theater and classical voice. The techniques taught in contemporary vocal performance can benefit singers across various genres. If you’re passionate about exploring modern styles and want to enhance your versatility, this program will be a great fit for you. It’s all about finding your unique voice within the contemporary landscape.

Any advice you’d give to students considering applying to this program? What kinds of songs do you like to hear?

My advice would be to choose songs that resonate with you personally. Authenticity in performance is vital, so pick pieces that showcase your voice and style. I enjoy hearing a mix of popular covers, as well as more unique selections that might not be mainstream. The best performances come from a place of passion and connection to the material.

What do you love most about teaching?

What I love most about teaching is witnessing the growth and transformation of my students. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them gain confidence, discover new aspects of their artistry, and embrace their uniqueness. Helping them find their voice and express themselves is what motivates me every day.

Anything else you’d like to share?

I just want to emphasize that this program is about fostering a supportive community of artists. Whether you’re a beginner or have experience, we’re here to nurture your talent, celebrate your individuality, and inspire creativity. I’m looking forward to welcoming our first cohort of students this summer!
