Summer programs come in all shapes and sizes for visual and performing arts. So it really helps to know your options and have a list of recommendations. That’s why the ArtsBridge community has weighed in on our top selections for 2019 programs ranging from days to weeks in categories such as acting, dance, music, musical theater, and visual arts. Of course our own ArtsBridge Summer programs get rave reviews, but many of our clients attend more than one program. While this is not a complete list, we hope it can help you identify the offerings that best suit you.

Acting/Musical Theater Summer Programs

 

ArtsBridge Summer Musical Theater (& Musical Theater 2) — Naturally, ArtsBridge Summer programs get high marks. Our two-week intensive provides specialized guidance on what it takes to be a theater artist, from acting to song & dance with a particular focus on college admission in the performing arts. Students looking to major or minor in musical theater learn how to make the right college choice while gaining great insight into auditions and applications as well as technique and repertoire. ArtsBridge Summer Dramatic Acting — This two-week intensive prepares serious students for conservatory-style actor training and delivers the type of rigorous instruction found in top college programs. This program is designed to explore vital acting techniques, improve vocal and physical instruments, and get students prepared for the college audition process. AMDA High School Summer Conservatory — Each summer, AMDA’s High School Summer Conservatory offers intensives in Musical Theater, Acting for the Stage, and Acting for TV and Film. Musical theater students will have the opportunity to expand their vocal performance skills and develop their audition book. Additionally, they train with experienced Broadway performers and directors to build an original show for the culminating performance. Acting for the stage students will study contemporary plays, work with a stellar faculty of working artists, and take part in a live performance at the close of the program. Students participating in the Acting for TV and Film program will hone their skills with some of NYC and LA’s finest actors and directors. Baldwin Wallace, Music Theatre Overtures — Seventeen hand-chosen high school juniors will join Victoria Bussert, director of BW’s nationally recognized music theatre program, for an intensive week of training including private voice lessons, a daily workshop, and monologue and dance classes. Boston Conservatory, Musical Theater Dance Intensive (MTDI) — Boston Conservatory’s Musical Theater Dance Intensive offers talented young dancers the opportunity to deepen their skills and challenge their abilities as they work with Broadway veterans and acclaimed faculty in rigorous training in ballet, jazz, and theater dance. The dance program is complemented with classes in voice and acting to build triple-threat performers. Students will emerge from this three-week intensive with increased technical abilities in ballet, jazz, and theater dance, improved skills in choral ensemble work, and greater confidence in and understanding of acting skills and how they apply to “acting the song.” Students between the ages of 15 and 25 with significant dance experience are encouraged to apply. Boston University Summer Theater Institute (BUSTI) — This immersive, five-week program is designed to emulate the freshman BFA experience. Broadway Dreams Summer Intensive — Students who participate in the week-long workshops receive personal instruction from Broadway performers and industry professionals on acting, vocal technique, song selection, and dance. Emerson Pre-College Musical Theater Program — Musical Theatre Studio offers rising high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to train in an intensive, 5-week musical theatre program. French Woods Festival — French Woods is an individual choice performing arts summer camp serving ages 7 to 17. They offer programs in theater, dance, music, circus, magic, rock and roll, visual arts, film and video, sports, tennis, fitness, water sports, skate board, horseback riding, and more. Younger campers have more guidance and supervision, while older campers are able to take on some responsibility and have a chance to work in the areas of their interest. French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts is located on a private lake in the western Catskill Mountains of New York State near the Delaware River on the Pennsylvania Border. Long Lake Arts Camp — Long Lake Camp For The Arts is a summer Performing and Fine Arts overnight camp serving ages 8 to 16. MPulse Summer Performing Arts Institutes (University of Michigan) — MPulse provides an opportunity for approximately 250 young musicians and performing artists to gain exposure to the rigorous training provided by the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. The Theatre & Drama Academy is only open to students completing grades 10-11 in the school year prior to the MPulse Summer Institute. The Musical Theatre Workshop is open only to students who completed junior year in the year prior to the summer Workshop, although applications from students of exceptional ability and experience who have completed sophomore year may also be considered. The Performing Arts Project (TPAP)  These summer intensives are located on the campus of Wake Forest University. Blueprint is a two-week program for students ages 14 to 18, focusing on technique and audition preparation. Rutgers Summer Acting Conservatory (RSAC) — An unparalleled conservatory training for young people serious about acting, RSAC is a highly selective, four-week conservatory acting program that accepts only 38 high school students from across the country. All conservatory faculty are working theater professionals dedicated to providing students with a challenging, inspiring learning environment that allows each student to develop as a young theater artist. RSAC now also offers a Musical Theatre track for 12 – 14 high school students who will study acting technique with equal focus on singing and dancing. Walnut Hill School Summer Theater — The Summer Theater Program’s combination of studio classes and professionally mounted stage productions allows students to develop their craft and apply their skills in performance. During this four-week boarding program for students ages 13–17, each student takes daily classes in acting, musical theater, and dance and is cast in a play and a musical. Over the course of the program, students may also have the opportunity to work with guest faculty from some of the country’s leading colleges and universities, such as The Juilliard School, Carnegie Mellon University, Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and The Boston Conservatory. Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) — This is the definitive program for talented and motivated high school students: a five-week, college-level art-making experience in the nation’s first and premier school of fine art. The program is open to students who will have completed 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades by Summer 2019. Students take rigorous courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and illustration and have the opportunity to earn four college-level credits. Pratt Institute — Over 400 high school students have an invaluable opportunity to sharpen their portfolios, get a taste of college life, and earn four elective college credits. Students choose a concentration of study modeled after Pratt’s undergraduate offerings, including art, design, architecture, creative writing, cultural studies and many other creative fields. ArtsBridge Summer ArtSong — Spend two weeks with faculty from top college and conservatory voice programs concentrating on solo classical vocal skills within the art song repertoire. The curriculum stresses vocal technique, diction and language, repertoire, acting, and performance and audition skills as well as guest master classes and workshops on a range of musical topics and college/conservatory auditions. Aspen Music Festival and School (AMFS) — In addition to private instruction, many students rehearse and perform major orchestral repertoire side-by-side with their teachers and/or principal players from major orchestras, including those of New York, Vienna, Los Angeles, St. Louis, San Francisco, Cleveland, Chicago, and Philadelphia. NYU Steinhardt Classical Vocal Intensive — This two-week program employs both group and individual instruction, allowing students to explore the techniques of classical vocal performance from the perspective of the singing actor. Activities include yoga for singers, stage deportment and dance classes, staging rehearsals, lyric diction and song analysis classes, private song coaching, voice lessons, and master classes. Students who successfully complete the summer workshop and apply for 2019 Fall admission are advanced to a live audition and not required to submit a pre-screen audition.
