Summer programs come in all shapes and sizes for visual and performing arts. So it really helps to know your options and have a list of recommendations. That’s why the ArtsBridge community has weighed in on our top selections for 2017 programs ranging from days to weeks in categories such as acting, musical theater, visual arts, music, and dance. Of course our own ArtsBridge Summer programs get rave reviews, but many of our clients attend more than one program. While this is not a complete list, it is an excellent list that we hope can help you identify the offerings that best suit you.

 

Acting/Musical Theater Summer Programs

 

ArtsBridge Summer Musical Theater — Naturally, ArtsBridge Summer get high marks:) Our flagship two-week intensive provides specialized guidance on what it takes to be a theater artist, from acting to song & dance with a particular focus on college admission in the performing arts. ArtsBridge Summer Dramatic Acting — This two-week intensive prepares serious students for conservatory-style actor training and delivers the type of rigorous instruction found in top college and conservatory programs. Boston University Summer Theater Institute (BUSTI) — An immersive, five-week program is designed to emulate the freshman BFA experience. It is focused on performance training and theatre-making for serious and highly-motivated high school students. BUSTI students earn four college credits for their coursework. Broadway Dreams Summer Intensive – Students who participate in the week-long workshops receive personal instruction from Broadway performers and industry professionals on acting, vocal technique, song selection and dance. Students also audition for top Broadway casting directors and agents. The intensive concludes with a professional showcase at week’s end, starring students alongside their Broadway faculty. Emerson Pre-College Musical Theater Program — Musical Theatre Studio offers rising high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to train in an intensive, 5-week musical theatre program. NYU, Tisch: Summer High School — In each four-week program, students are enrolled in college-level courses taught by full-time faculty. Upon successful completion of the summer program, students earn six college credits. Summer 2017 in New York, NY. Learn more

 

MPulse Summer Performing Arts Institutes (University of Michigan) — Provides an opportunity for approximately 250 young musicians and performing artists to gain exposure to the rigorous training provided by the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. The Performing Arts Project (TPAP)  These summer intensives are located on the campus of Wake Forest University. Both high school and college-aged performers attend the program, but most classes are “divided according to age and individual strengths.” TPAP summer intensives run for two weeks and three weeks in June and July. Summer 2017 in Winston-Salem, NC. Walnut Hill School Summer Theater — Develops theatrical knowledge through performance and classroom work for further study in school and college. During the five-week boarding program for students ages 13–17, each participant takes daily classes in acting, musical theater, and dance and is cast in a play and a musical, as well as the ensemble of a second musical production. Pratt Institute — Over 400 high school students have an invaluable opportunity to sharpen their portfolios, get a taste of college life, and earn four elective college credits. Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) — The six-week summer residential offers high school students a comprehensive introduction to the college art school experience. Vocal and Instrumental:

 

ArtsBridge Summer ArtSong — As a voice student, you’ll concentrate on solo classical vocal skills within the art song repertoire. The curriculum stresses vocal technique, diction and language, repertoire, acting for singers, and performance and audition skills as well as guest master classes and workshops on a range of musical topics and college/conservatory auditions. Aspen Music Festival and School (AMFS)  In addition to private instruction, many students rehearse and perform major orchestral repertoire side-by-side with their teachers or principal players from major orchestras in New York to San Francisco and Los Angeles. Students in all programs are able to attend more than 300 performances, master classes, lectures, and panels. More than 600 students attend from 40 states and 40 countries ranging in age from 10-37. Meadowmont School of Music — Located in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, a seven-week program for “exceptional string players and pianists.” Students are ages 9 to 30. Music Horizons (Eastman School of Music) — A 3-week residential program that gives students a taste of life at the Eastman School of Music without the snow. NYU Steinhardt Classical Vocal Intensive — Explore the techniques of classical vocal performance from the perspective of the singing actor. This two-week program employs both group and individual instruction. Activities include yoga for singers, stage deportment and dance classes, staging rehearsals, lyric diction and song analysis classes, private song coaching, voice lessons, and a series of master classes on subjects related to the field. School of Improvisational Music (SIM) Summer Intensive — The School for Improvisational Music is for aspiring students of jazz and creative music. This year the program will take place at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, and is open to all ages. Since 2001, SIM has held 25 intensive workshop sessions for 800 students from around the globe. Skidmore Jazz Institute — Provides a new generation of musicians the opportunity to mingle with and learn from gifted educators and world-class performers in an intimate and supportive environment. Alonzo King Lines Ballet Summer Program — Young dancers are guided through a collaborative journey of artistic risk-taking and independent thinking to explore, solve problems and realize their full potential.
